Leandro Paredes recounts the incident with Gavi after the World Cup final:
"Gavi came up to me after the final whistle, while everyone was celebrating. He said to me in Spanish: 'There’s no referee or VAR to help Messi today.' I didn’t like it. It was disrespectful, especially after the match had ended.
I walked up to him and punched him in the face. I wasn’t going to stand there and let some kid talk about Messi like that. After that, things escalated: players from both teams rushed in; there was shoving and shouting—everyone was defending their teammates.
These things happen when emotions are running high after a World Cup final. I’m not proud that it turned into a confrontation, but I wasn’t going to let someone disrespect Messi without reacting..."
V každom prípade dúfam, že dostane exemplárny trest a nie len on. Aj Ayala...
"Gavi was asked what caused the fight between Leandro Paredes and him after the FIFA World Cup final.
🎙️ Reporter: “Gavi, what really happened between you and Paredes after the final whistle?”
🗣️ Gavi: “I honestly wasn’t expecting him to react the way he did. All I said was, ‘Lionel Messi couldn’t save them today, and the referee failed them too.’ It wasn’t meant as a personal insult—it was just something I said in the heat of the moment.
“Paredes heard it, turned around immediately, and came straight towards me. Before I knew it, we were face-to-face, players started getting involved, and the next thing I remember, I was on the ground.
“Football is an emotional game, especially after a World Cup final. Players exchange words all the time, but I never expected it to escalate into a fight.
“I have nothing but respect for Messi and everything he’s achieved. My comment was about the match and the emotions of the moment, not about disrespecting him as a person.
“Things happened very quickly. Both teams rushed in to defend their teammates, and what started as a few words turned into a big confrontation.
“At the end of the day, emotions got the better of everyone. We celebrated because we won the World Cup, Argentina were disappointed because they lost, and unfortunately, a few words were enough to spark an incident that shouldn’t have happened."
